What Whencee is

Whencee is a live-location map for small groups. You create or join a "map" with a 6-character code, and everyone in that map can see each other's position and a shared chat while the map exists. There are no accounts, no fees, and no ads, and the map forgets everyone the moment the last person leaves.

Getting started

• Create a map. Open the app and tap Create. You get a 6-character code. Optionally set a passphrase to end-to-end encrypt the map.
• Invite people. Tap Share to send the code (and a link) by text or any app. Anyone can join from the app or from a web browser at whencee.com.
• Join a map. Enter the 6-character code (and the passphrase, if the map has one) and tap Join.
• Choose whether to share. When you join, the app asks whether to show your location to the others in that map. You can decline and still see everyone else and use the chat.

Common questions

I don't see anyone on the map. Whencee is a multi-person map: you only see people who have joined the same code (and typed the same passphrase, if there is one). Make sure at least one other person has joined with the exact same code. If you're testing alone, open the same code in a desktop browser at whencee.com as a second participant.

My own location isn't showing. Whencee needs location permission, and you must choose to share when you join. On iPhone, check Settings › Privacy & Security › Location Services › Whencee is set to "While Using the App" (or "Always" if you want it to keep updating in the background while you're in a map). Then leave and rejoin the map, and choose to share.

How do I stop sharing my location? Leave the map, or turn off sharing from the map's controls. Your position is removed immediately, and when the last person leaves, the whole map (positions, chat, all of it) is deleted from the server.

How do I hide someone I don't want to see? Open that person from the People list (or tap their marker) and choose Block. They disappear from your map and chat. You can unblock them the same way.

I forgot the passphrase for an encrypted map. Passphrases never leave your device and are never stored on the server, so they cannot be recovered or reset. Ask whoever created the map, or create a new map.

Is my location or chat stored anywhere? Only the latest position and the most recent messages live in the map while it's active, and everything is deleted when the last person leaves. On a passphrase-protected map it's end-to-end encrypted and the server only relays ciphertext it cannot read. See the Privacy Policy for the full detail.
